Cheryl Arnold and Joe Bragole from the Los Angeles area, fishing with Captain Fransisco "Cuate" Fernandez caught dorado, sierra and a nice red snapper. They also caught triggerfish and Mexican bonito (the white meat version-the one with the teeth.)

We had half of the week with windy days, a couple of yellow flag days and a few dead calm "glad to be alive(and fishing in Baja" days.

The biggest news is that mackerel are back on the scene. The deep spot outside of Coronado Island has been kicking out foot-long macks but only for the bait suppliers. They are the only ones that will be on the spot at 2 a..m.. It's a late night bite so if you want mackerel, be the first boat at the Marina.....5 a.m. might do.

An interesting note about the Marina is that a few local fishermen have been catching good-sized Cortez halibut inside the Marina on live sardines. The rocks at the marina and along the Malecón near the Marina have been casting platforms for some light-line enthusiasts. Spinning gear with some plastics and spoons can be entertaining in the early dawn.

Outside at the deep spots we have been getting bigger red snapper. No yellowtail this week but we did lose some big fish that pulled hard and spit the bait.

From Tinturara around the backside past Lobo, there has been some action for the boats that fish Carmen Island.

We have been getting a mixed bag where we expected to see cabrilla and hopefully, a pargo.

No way -- we trolled up sierra and dorado while working the rocks! One hundred feet of the rocky cliffs and we picked up big sierra and medium-sized bull dorado. Most of the catches were on a pair of MirroLures.

The next seven days are supposed to be windy. When the weather flattens out again, I would like to try Catalan Island with some wire leaders added. Sierra's bigger cousin, the wahoo, may be ready to bite...Rick Hill, Pinchy Sportfishing
