Crane Prairie has been fishing well

Crane Prairie has been fishing well. Balanced leeches, chironomids, callibaetis, and san juans are solid choices for your fly box. Stripping flies on an intermediate line is an efficient way to fish and land some takes. Don't hesitate to try a big foam dry like a Chubby Chernobyl—you could be surprised by eager fish.

Focus your efforts on early morning and late evening when fish are most active. Crane Prairie fish can be line-shy, so consider fishing with lighter gear. While surface flies might be challenging, watch for callibaetis hatches.

Black balanced leeches have been particularly effective, especially on overcast days. Stripping leeches has also been fooling a good number of fish. Other worthwhile subsurface flies include chironomids, midges, and dark assassins. Sizes 16-22 in darker hues with red accents have been hitting the mark.
