The trout action in the Upper Kern has been steady all winter long
3-8-2024
Chad Burton and Chris Borden
The trout action in the Upper Kern has been steady all winter long with plants going in almost weekly. Riverside Park to Powerhouse #3 remains one of the best sections in the Upper Kern. Moving up the river within the 20-mile stretch, anglers have had success with a mix of stocked, holdover and wild trout. This area is fooling fish with salmon eggs, minijigs, and spinners. Fly anglers have done well with various nymphs and streamers. In the Lower Kern, trout fishing has improved after the recent plants. Trout have been coming on salmon eggs, pinched crawlers and minijigs. The Lower Kern bass bite is fair to good on small spinners, nightcrawlers and crankbaits. Catfish can be found in the Lower Kern on sardines, anchovies and nightcrawlers. At the time of reporting, the Upper Kern River is flowing at 901 CFS and the Lower Kern River is flowing at 413 CFS.
