Fishing at the Upper Deschutes continues to be good

Fly and Field Outfitters
Fishing at the Upper Deschutes continues to be good. This is the last week of fishing for the section above Crane Prairie. This week’s weather is looking like the opposite of last week. Warmer to start and cool and rainy to end. The warmer days will likely have very productive fishing during the last few summer hatches. Once it gets cooler I would start to focus more on streamers. Pale morning duns and blue wing olives are the main hatches. PMDs are more common on warmer days and BWOs like it cooler and rainy. There may be a few caddis out on the warm days as well. If you want to fish terrestrials I would recommend covering lots of water to improve your chances. Nymphing has been good with the usual smaller mayfly patterns and midges. The slim shady BWO is a great pattern or up there. Streamers are really effective for targeting the bigger brookies. Usually, the big brookies won’t let themselves be seen so target areas that have lots of overhead cover. Next year we’re hoping for higher water levels on the upper, despite this, the fishing was fun this summer. Thanks for tuning into our Upper Deschutes reports this summer!
