East Lake continues to have very productive fishing. Due to the low water levels, many anglers are either fishing out of a float tube or from the banks. Word is that there are some big fish cruising fairly close to the banks. The forecast shows very cool temperatures and lots of precipitation up there this week (even a small chance of snow). The callibaetis hatch is still going strong, with the cooler temperatures expect the hatch to be the thickest during the warmest part of the day. Many of the callibaetis are still around size 16 - 20; however, the cool weather has the potential to bring out some of the larger bugs. As mentioned last week, baetis (BWO) patterns can work well for imitating the size 18 - 20 callibaetis. Action with terrestrials will likely be slow as we move into fall. Callibaetis nymphs are still the go-to subsurface fly near the banks and in water that’s not too deep. Balanced leeches are a great bet, especially if you can get them a good way out from the bank. Chironomids, midges, and dark assassins all have good potential as well. Stripping leeches and streamers is an excellent tactic. The browns love eating meat during a cool stormy day. Ocean conditions are showing high chances of a La Nina winter, which typically means lots of precipitation and cool weather. Winter is closer than you think, get up to East before you miss your chance.
