It's Go Time For The Lower Deschutes Right Now

5-21-2021
Fly and Field Outfitters

It’s go time for the Lower Deschutes right now. Big bugs are out and about and the fish are starting to key into them. With the cooler weather this week, the bugs will be clinging to the bankside vegetation. Focus your efforts around overhanging trees and shrubs. The shop has been selling cubbies and other big bug patterns like crazy, swing by and pick some up before they’re gone. Also come prepared with some green drake patterns, sometimes the fish will prefer drakes over stoneflies during a big emergence. Pale morning dun hatches and blue winged olive hatches will also probably take place in this cooler weather. Caddis will likely be less prevalent until we get back to typical spring temperatures. For nymphs, focus around stone flies and mayfly patterns. During a hatch, try to match the size and general colors of the dry flies with a nymph in your box. The best fishing of the year can be found on the Lower Deschutes right now.
