THE IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

Following a couple of slow weeks of fishing, Captain Temo Verboonen reported significant changes this past week that wound up with 4-6 billfish release days for the offshore anglers. Temo added, "Some of the boats were reporting simultaneous strikes with as many as five fish at a time coming in on the lures and rigged baits and producing the adrenaline rush for everyone aboard. Some wonderful and fun fishing days with terrific action that was keeping everyone busy and happy". The inshore fishing was producing many big jack crevalle with plenty of roosterfish mixed in with the jacks and everything was taking live baits with some fair numbers on the poppers, too. It was one of those extraordinary fishing weeks when the fish were being ultra-cooperative and not shy about bait, lures or trolling speeds.

IZ Climate: Ranged from 68 nights to 91 daytime highs and a 58% humidity level. All days were sunny and warm with no cloud cover. Bring hats, long sleeve shirts and plenty o0f sun lotion. If you wear flip-flops or sandals, be sure to wear socks to protect your feet from getting scorched, ruining your vacation.

Sea Conditions: Sea temps at 82 inshore and rising to 85 offshore at about 10 miles or so and very good clarity and of course, calm seas to go with the fabulous weather and outstanding fishing.

Best Fishing Area: The offshore fishing was good from about 13-15 miles offshore, straight out from the Bay and the action started the minute you arrived on location. Inshore Action remained consistently good at he Valentin Point area.

Best Lure/Bait: The offshore action was excellent on both, rigged baits and artificials and the billfish were taking both. The inshore action was best on live bait but the fish were not shying away from the poppers, either.

Bait Supply: Freshly caught baits were readily available for the anglers and provided as part of the charters. Live bait was in very good supply at the $5.00 per dozen rate.
