THE PUERTO MORELOS FISHING REPORT FOR THE MARINA EL CID SPORTFISHING FLEET, (CANCUN TO COZUMEL AREA)
The fish catches from the Puerto Morelos area encompass an enormous variety of fin fishes and each week seems to add a new species that I have never heard of or can't find internet information for. Many of the fish in this are can be clumped into a reef fish category that reflects a myriad of species. This past week is one of those weeks that reflects a huge variety of mixed catches for this area and it is quite possible that some are indigenous to this local reef area? I would share with you that our new reporter, Ms. Jessica Ortega, has provided me with more information than I have ever received from this area and this past weeks report included a 27 species in the mixed bag catch report. Included were 3 dorado, 41 bonito, 21 triggerfish, 28 cabrillas, 40 groupers, 71 banana fish, 16 giant barracuda, 45 huachinangos, 84 snappers, 3 coronados, 3 mojarrs, 76 chac-chi, 3 king mackerel, 11 porgy, 4 Spanish mackerel, 17 soap fish, 21 rubias, 2 rabbit fish, 1 blue runner, 6 blackfin tuna, 1 rainbow runner, 1 tigerfish, 2 wahoo, 2 needlefish, 2 burra fish, 7 sandfish, 5 escochines, 2 coninudas, 1 casogon, 7 cuchas and 1 miscellaneous. The total catch of 527 fish reflected an average of just above 11 fish per boat day fished and that is very good action for the anglers.
PM Climate: Air temps ranged from 58 nights to 83 daytime highs with a 78% humidity level. It has been a partly cloudy week with an occasional thunder shower mixed in, then followed by sunshine.
Sea Conditions: Sea temps stable at 80-81 degrees throughout the area. Surface breezes have been varied from 7mph to about 13 mph and have flowed from northerly to easterly directions.
Best Bait/Lure: The bait of choice continues to be the freshly caught and provided ballyhoo baits.
