THE CABO SAN LUCAS FISHING REPORT FOR THE GAVIOTA SPORTFISHING FLEET AND FISH CABO FLEET


There were two trophy sized blue marlin landed on Tuesday, a 773-pounder, taken aboard the Mucho Loco II, following a 7 hour battle and a 684-pounder, taken aboard the Bad Medicine. The bigger fish was taken on a 5.5 Zuker, red & yellow artificial, (locally called a tigrillo lure) and landed by angler W.H. Foster, while fishing off Cabo Falso about 4-5 miles or so. The 684 was also landed on the Pacific side of Cabo, but a little further to the northwest, around the Golden Gate Bank. Details were sketchy on angler name, bait or lure, tackle info, etc. Both are remarkable catches for Cabo, especially during January, and are typically normal for the October-November time frame. High billfish boat for the week was the Fish Cabo with 3 stripers for 3 days fished, along with 12 dorado and 18 Sierra. The "Gaviota VII" also had 4 stripers, 1 wahoo, 3 skipjack and 19 dorado for their 6 days fished. The overall fishing, especially for the billfish, had slowed a little this past week to about one for every third boat but still, good action on dorado and other smaller game fish. The overall fish counts for a combined total of 34 days fished reflected 11 stripers, (7 released) 1 mako shark, 3 wahoo, 2 yellowfin tuna, 3 skipjack, 21 Sierra and 64 dorado.


Cabo Climate: Air tmperatures at 60 ni9ghts to 82 daytime highs and a 55% humidity level. It was a partly cloudy week with intermittent sunshine for the most part with Friday thru Sunday all cloudy days.

Sea Conditions: Surface breezes varied from west northwest to east northeast and ranged from near calm to10 mph until Sunday and then cranked up to about 20 mph for the day. Sea temps on the Pacific side, from the Finger Bank, down across the Golden Gate Bank, the Jaime Bank and out across the 1000 fathom curve and extending easterly to Cabo San Lucas, all at 76-78 degrees. Easterly from Cabo and into the Sea of Cortez in the area from Chileno to the Gorda Banks and northerly for about 10 miles, extending out beyond the 1,000 fathom curve, all at 74 degrees. Los Frailes and now pushing southerly is all at 70 degrees. Lots of varied temperatures in the Sea of Cortez, and all on a cooling downward trend.

Best Fishing Area: Continues to be on the Pacific side. The bulk of the billfish, including the 2 big blue marlin, came from the Cabo Falso area, about 4-6 miles offshore.

Best Bait/Lure: We know that one of the big blue marlin was taken on an artificial but have no insider info on the other. The stripers were taken on live bait and rigged baits. Dorado taken on both.
