Puerto Morelos Fishing Report

1-15-2015
Larry Edwards

Finally, we now have a new reporter for the Puerto Morelos area, as well as assistant to the Fleet Manager & Dock Master, Armando Gutierrez. We are very much looking forward to having Ms. Jessy forwarding the reports on a timely basis, allowing us to get the information out to all the interested parties each week. Hopefully, this will turn into a perfect source of localized information that reaches from Cancun to Cozumel on a weekly basis.

This past week reflected some unusual weather conditions for January that resulted in three red flag port closure days before settling down to their normal good weather for this time of year. The fishing was a little off during the full moon phase and less boats fishing due to the bad weather days, but otherwise, there was still plenty of action to be had by the anglers. The report reflects a total of 26 days fished that reflected a 19 fish mixed bag catch that included 33 dorado, (one of the best dorado counts for the past several years) 44 bonito, 19 rubias, 26 banana fish, 13 cabrillas, 16 snappers, 14 grouper, 5 blue runners, 1 rainbow runner, 45 chac-chis, 10 giant barracuda, 2 porgy, 2 Spanish mackerel, (aka Sierra) 3 needlefish, 3 blackfin tuna, 1 crowned fish, 2 cochis, 5 soapfish and 2 pollack. This wide variety fishing allowed for a 9-plus fish per boat day that kept the anglers happy.

PM Climate: It was a partly cloudy week with intermittent sunshine and temps that ranged from 64 nights to 82 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: There were a few rough weather days that allowed for 3 red flag port closure days but then turned to the better conditions. Sea temps went down a degree or two and held at 79-80 throughout the area with surface breezes ranging from calm to about 5-6 miles per hour and flowing in from the easterly directions.

Best Lure/Bait: The bait of choice remains the always available ballyhoo but some of the boats are using the smaller Zuker feathers and doing well with bonito and blackfin tuna and even an occasional dorado and wahoo.

Bait Supply: Continues to be readily available with ample ballyhoo that are provided as part of every charter.
