Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Fishing Report
1-8-2015
Larry Edwards
Our on-the-spot reporter for Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, Captain Temo Verboonen, reported the full moon phase had a significant impact on the overall fishing results this past week. Most of the better fishing and the hot strike time was early mornings that faded into a no bite period as the day progressed. The blue water started at about 8 miles from the Bay and the early bite was good for a few blue marlin, sailfish and dorados for some of the boats and others drawing blanks. The inshore fishing held some greener and colder water and even the easy to catch bonito were ignoring the lure presentations. We are now looking forward to the change in the brightness of the moon to restore the fast action we were enjoying in the last few reports.
IZ Climate: There's been a few scattered, passing, clouds but mostly sunny, warm days and evenings. Temps remain good at 66 nights to 92 daytime highs and a humidity level at 64%.
Sea Conditions: Surface breezes have been a little varied but mostly flowing from the southwest and ranging from near calm to 9 mph. The inshore temps are a little cooler at 82-83 and rising to 84-85 for the offshore waters. Excellent clarity begins at about 8 miles.
Best Fishing Area: The best action starts at the 8-mile mark and mostly a very early bite with the full moon condition.
Best Bait/Lure: The rigged trolling baits continue to work well for the billfish and the dorado.
Bait Supply: Fresh rigging baits and live bait were both readily available. Rigged baits are provided as part of the charter & live bait is $5.00 per dozen.
