Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report

7-17-2014

The billfish catches are running at about 62% of the boat days fished and high boat for the week was the "Tuna Time", skippered by Captain Roberto Marquez, reporting in with 3 stripers for 2 days fished. The overall combined fish counts for a total of 26 days fished reflected 9 stripers, (8 released) 6 sailfish, (4 released) 13 dorado, 1 hammerhead shark and 17 skipjack tuna. According to Captain Marquez, the billfish are scattered about the area. He reported catching 1 striper about a mile or so outside the harbor and the other two were offshore and more toward the 1150 fathom spot, adding, if you get a little bit lucky right now and find a sailfish, it usually results in a multiple sailfish catch opportunity but the stripers are mostly single fish strikes on live bait presentations. It appears that the water temperatures may be getting warm enough to have an adverse effect on the striper action in the area while favored by the sailfish.

Cabo Climate: Partly cloudy days that are mixed with intermittent sunny periods and temperatures that ranged from 78 nights to 93 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: Overall, it's excellent for the fishing in all areas. Sea temps on the Pacific side ranged from 83-87 degrees from the Finger Bank to Cabo San Lucas and changed from Cabo and into the Sea of Cortez to 87-89 degrees. Surface breezes to about 9mph, flowing in mostly from the southerly directions.

Best Fishing Area: The billfish are scattered about the area and on both sides. The Herradura, just south of Cabo was good for a few boats as was the 1150 Fathom Spot, but even so, the fish were not concentrated.

Best Bait/Lure: A few fish taken on the artificials and I did hear of a smaller blue marlin taken in the Herradura area, about a 250 pounder. Overall, live bait was best for the sailfish and for the stripers.

Live Bait Supply: Remains very good for the caballitos and continues at the $3.00 per bait rate.
