Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Fishing Report

7-17-2014

Finally, a rather glowing report for the sportfishing from Zihuatanejo Bay. Captain Temo Verboonen reported an excellent weather and sea surface fishing week that resulted in exceptional fishing for both, inshore and offshore waters. The sailfish action was producing a hot bite for the anglers with boats reporting 3-plus fish per day, along with an occasional blue marlin in the mix. The inshore bite produced a variety of good action for roosterfish, bonitos and jack crevalles along the beaches and plenty of smaller dorado running close to the rocks. Temo says that the fishing came "right back to normal" with very good weather and sea conditions for the past week.

IZ Climate: Mostly cloudy days with sporadic sunshine periods and temps that ranged from 77 nights to 95 daytime highs and included some occasional summer showers, too.

Sea Conditions: Sea temps varied from 87 inshore to 88 offshore and very good clarity within just a few miles of the coastline. Surface conditions mostly calm with breezes flowing mostly from the westerly directions up to 10mph.

Best Fishing Area: The billfish are just out front of the Bay, starting at about 7-8 miles. Dorado at the rocks and the roosterfish and jack crevalle along the sandy beaches.

Best Bait/Lures: Rigged baits working very well for the sailfish. Poppers and live bait working well for the inshore roosters and jacks.

Bait Supply: The bait supply is in excellent shape and readily available for both, live bait and fresh baits for rigging. Live bait continues at $5.00 per dozen.
