Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report

There are still lots of billfish popping up throughout the area but for whatever reason, they are being less than cooperative with their feeding habits. Seems like you can find plenty of fish to bait but only an occasional fish will take the bait. Some of the skippers mentioned they were having better luck with the fresh rigged ballyhoo baits for the billfish which has been a substantial change in the baiting method that's been used for the past 40 years or so. Live bait has always worked better than the slow trolled rigged baits for this area for a long time now but occasionally, just a minor change in an old technique can make a huge difference in the bite reaction and this change seems to be what it takes to get the billfish to bite. The overall catches for 18 days fished reflected 15 stripers, (14 released) 1 mako shark, 2 roosterfish and 4 dorado.
Cabo Climate: A mostly sunny, clear and warm week with temperatures that varied from 73 nights to 98 daytime highs. Thursday was the odd day and while the weather forecasts predicted sunshine conditions, it actually rained a little in the morning & then cleared to a nice day.
Sea Conditions: We had a couple of rough, choppy days on Monday, Tuesday, causing most of the boats to return early. The remainder of the week was pretty good with easterly direction winds varying from calm in the mornings to 10-11 mph in the pm. Sea temps on the Pacific side at 73-75 out to about 20 miles and south to Cabo Falso, rising to 77-79 to Cabo San Lucas and then increasing to 82-83 from Chileno and into the Sea of Cortez.
Best Fishing Area: Chileno to Palmilla Ridge was the primary catch area and was followed by the Cabo Falso area.
Best Bait/Lure: An awful lot of fish are being taken on rigged ballyhoo baits as well as live bait and a few fish on the artificials.
Live Bait Supply: The live bait supply has been holding up very well for a long time and even through the full moon phases. Live bait costs remain at $3.00 per bait as does the frozen ballyhoo baits, all paid to the bait vendors at time of receipt.
