Mazatlan Fishing Report

5-8-2014
Larry Edwards

The catching from Mazatlan seemed to slow up some over the past week and for no apparent reason. In fact, the water temps moved up a notch or two and the off shore water clarity was improved and one would have thought the fishing results would have reflected an increase. Unfortunately, that was not the case. The crew are still seeing plenty of billfish but they remain very finicky biters and don't seem to want the baits being presented. The overall fish counts for 10 days of offshore fishing resulted in 6 stripers, (2 released) 1 dorado and 4 yellowfin tuna. The inshore fishing was very difficult this past week and while the water temps were really good, the clarity was poor and the water color was a brownish green. The Anzuelo III was the only panga that reported a catch and he was actually fishing offshore during a trip that allowed for 1 striper, 1 dorado and 1 bonito and that was the total super panga count for 8 days fished. It's a pretty rare occasion not to be able to catch something on the super pangas when fishing the inshore waters.

Mazatlan Climate: Partly cloudy days with sporadic sunshine during the early week and moving into a mostly sunny and warm weekend. Temps ranged from 63 nights to 88 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: Temps increased this past week to 81 inshore and rising to 83-85 in the offshore waters. Clarity improved considerably from about 10 miles out and beyond. Surface breezes were mostly from the westerly directions from calm to 17 mph. Seemed like the later in the day allowed for the increased surface winds.

Best Fishing Area: None was reported as the fish were all over but not eager to bite.

Best Bait/Lure: The rigged baits were the producers of the billfish.

Bait Supply: Remained very good for live bait and fresh baits for rigging.
