Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report

5-1-2014
Larry Edwards

High billfish boat for the week was the "Gaviota IV", skippered by Captain Octavio Castillo and the "Fish Cabo", skippered by Captain Gil Marquez, both with 4 stripers released for two days fished. Marlin were seen in every offshore direction after departing from Cabo Harbor and according to Captain Roberto Marquez, they baited more than 30 fish in a couple of hours for no biters at all. The better catches were made from Chileno to Palmilla and in the area surrounding the 1150 Fathom Spot but numerous opportunities to bait billfish were readily available throughout the area. The overall fish counts for a combined total of 13 days fished reflected 18 stripers, (17 released) and 7 dorado, reflecting a much better catch week than the week before.

Cabo Climate: Mostly sunny & warm days and good evenings with temps that ranged from 66 nights to 91 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: Pacific side is cooling down and now at 69 degrees and brushing up to the warmer waters at Cabo Falso at 74 degrees and rising to 78-79 degrees from Cabo San Lucas and into the Sea of Cortez. Surface breezes ranged from flat calm to about 14 mph and flowing mostly from the southeasterly directions. One fishing day lost to closure of the port due to rough and windy conditions but good for the remainder of the week.

Best Fishing Area: The billfish are everywhere from a half-mile out from the harbor and beyond in any offshore direction. Better bite was between Chileno & Palmilla, about a mile off the beach and the 1150 Fathom Spot on a line toward the Outer Gorda Bank.

Best Bait/Lure: Live bait was best by far as the billfish were unusually finicky even with the best of live baits, lighter lines and smaller hooks.

Live Bait Supply: Excellent supply continues at the $3.00 per bait rate.
