The summer marlin bite continues to be a hot bite for the fleets and has been a fairly sustained bite now for several weeks. High boat for the week was the "Gaviota IX", producing and releasing 8 stripers for 3 fishing days and was followed by the Fish Cabo, reflecting 8 stripers released for 4 fishing days. According to Captain Roberto Marquez, the billfish are scattered over a wide area that ranged from just outside the Bay at Cabo San Lucas, in the Santa Maria Bay area and offshore at the 1150 fathom spot. Roberto reported not all boats caught billfish this past week as he personally had a 7 strike marlin day that nothing was landed and they wound-up with a single jack crevalle for the day's effort. He said the billfish were "short-strikes" and they just couldn't get one to stick for the anglers. The overall catches for a combined total of 34 days fished reflected 55 stripers, (51 released) 1 sailfish released, 1 jack crevalle, 3 hammerhead sharks, 6 dorado and 16 yellowfin tuna.

Cabo Climate: Partly cloudy days for the most part with intermittent periods of sunshine. Temps varied from 72 nights to 91 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: The Pacific side water temps at 3-5 miles from the beach was cold at 69-71 degrees and ranged from Todos Santos to Cabo Falso and then, jutted offshore to about 15 miles. Offshore on the Pacific side, including the Golden Gate and Jaime Banks, held at about 75-76 degrees. Rounding the corner from Cabo San Lucas and out to the 95 Fathom Spot was a band of 75-76 degree water that warmed up from the 1150 Fathom Spot and northerly from there to 79-82 degrees. The surface winds were stronger toward the end of the week and flowing from the Northwest at 10-20 mph.

Best Fishing Area: The better billfish bite remained in the 1150 Fathom Spot area, but there were billfish showing up in a myriad of locations throughout the area.

Best Bait/Lure: The artificials were getting bit fairly well but getting the fish to stick was another story. Live bait was probably the best bet for the billfish bites and allowed for more fish to stay on the line for the anglers.

Live Bait Supply: Remained good for live bait and for the availability of frozen ballyhoo, all at the $3.00 per bait rate.
