We have a report in from Captain Roberto Marquez, owner of the Fish Cabo Fleet, telling about a huge blue marlin caught just 7-8 miles outside the Cabo Falso light house, tilting the scale at 1,070 lbs. The fish was taken aboard the sportfisher, "Ziggy", by the crew, skippered by Captain Chichi, (nickname) while fishing on a "busman's holiday". At 1:30 P.M. on Saturday afternoon, they were trolling a lure on 60 lb. mono when the monster marlin bit and the battle continued by the crew of three until 10:00 P.M., Saturday evening. The fish was too big to get aboard the boat and had to be slowly towed back to the harbor, finally arriving about 1:00 A.M., Sunday morning, then waiting until daylight to weigh the fish. An enormously increased striper bite took place this past week at the Golden Gate Bank and surrounding area, where many boats experienced double digit catches & releases. Unfortunately, our boats were all on short day charters and unable to get to the Golden Gate Bank for their clients and fished the local waters outside of Cabo Falso. The combined total fishing days reported was 11 days that resulted in 4 stripers released, 1 skipjack tuna, 1 wahoo and 42 dorado, (most all of the dorado were in the 30-35 lb. ranges).

Cabo Climate: Partly cloudy but warm & clear days with temps that ranged from 59 nights to 79 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: On the Pacific side, from the coast and out across the Golden Gate Bank and beyond to the 1000 fathom curve and southerly, down across the Jaime Bank, all holding well at 74-75 degrees. From Cabo San Lucas to Gorda Banks and out to the 1000 fathom curve at a good 77 degrees. From just above the Gorda Banks to Las Frailes, the temps have fallen to 71-73 degrees and the push is southerly toward the Gorda Banks. The water temps are beginning their annual changes throughout the area and on both sides of the peninsula.

Best Fishing Area: The Golden Gate Bank and surrounding area was the hot spot for stripers this past week and the Jaime Bank was hot for the school-sized yellowfin tuna running with the porpoise. While billfish were caught in a number of different areas along the Pacific side, the big concentration was from the Golden Gate Bank where a fair number of the boats had double digit releases for a single fishing day.

Best Bait/Lure: While the big blue was taken on a lure, the bulk of the billfish were taken on live bait tossed to the feeders at the Golden Gate Bank area.

Live Bait Supply: Remains good for the caballito supply and the price remains at $3.00 per bait.
