Chad Burton and Chris Borden
Lake Nacimiento dropped to 58 percent of its storage capacity, and water temperatures fell into the mid-seventies. Shad has been the theme at Naci, and bass anglers stuck with shad imitating baits to land good numbers. Darter head grubs, shaky heads, and drop shot all took spotted bass in 10 to 20 feet of water. Ox Blood, Aaron’s Magic, and Prizm Shad were good color choices. Crankbaits took bass along points, rocky structure, and steep walls. Top producers included Strike king 3XD and Spro RkCrawlers in shad patterns. A variety of topwater baits in shad colors fooled both white bass and spotted bass. Crappie anglers found biting fish in 10 to 25 feet of water with small live minnows working best. Baitfish colored minijigs tipped with crappie nibbles also took fish. Catfish were reliable for anglers throwing cut mackerel and dip bait.
