Chad Burton and Chris Borden
Last week the Upper Kern was stocked with trout from Riverside Park to Johnsondale Bridge. The weather is cooling and the flows are down with good clarity. Anglers have been scoring trout around the eddies and river bends off easy access points along the 20-mile stretch. Trout have come on salmon eggs, trout jigs and black/gold panther martins. Fly anglers have scored trout with attractor flies. The Upper Kern is scheduled to be stocked next week in Section 4; Riverside Park in Kernville to Powerhouse #3; Section 5, Fairview Dam to Lazy River Lodge; and Section 6, Fairview Dam to Johnsondale Bridge. In the Lower Kern, trout have been caught in the canyon up to Keysville with trout jigs and spinners. The bass fishing in the canyon and at Democrat continues to be very good. Bass have been going for Zman and crush city ned rigs, small crankbaits and Roboworms on drop shot. Catfish are being caught with nightcrawlers, chicken liver and cutbait. Bluegill can be caught throughout the lower Kern with live worms on drop shot. At the time of reporting, the Upper Kern River at Kernville was flowing at 238 CFS and the Lower Kern River was flowing at 692 CFS.
