Fishing Has Been Good

Fly and Field Outfitters
Fishing on the Lower Deschutes has been good. This heat wave brought insanely high temperatures into the canyon. From Sherars Falls down to the mouth, all angling for salmon, steelhead, sturgeon and trout is prohibited from 2pm until an hour before sunrise. Check for other emergency regulations at myodfw.com. It’s hard to say for sure, but the hatches have probably moved towards being really early or really late. Expect caddis and pale morning duns to be the main hatches. Caddis are especially productive. Fish love to feed on caddis pupae and emerging PMD nymphs. Pupa patterns are best in the 14 - 18 size range, some may get up to size 12. For your mayfly nymphs, 14 - 18 is productive as well. Split back PMDs can be really killer during a hatch. Never forget stonefly nymphs. A hungry redside has a really hard time passing up a well presented jimmy legs. It’s really hot down there, make sure you know how to keep yourself and the fish safe during extreme heat.
