Fishing Has Been Decent

Fly and Field Outfitters
Fishing has been decent on the Upper Deschutes. The hot weather may move some more fish out of Crane and into the cooler stream water. It’s really difficult to predict how insect hatches will respond to these temperatures. My best guess is that caddis and pale morning duns will be the most prominent. Fish may be reluctant to rise during the heat. Early morning and late evening will probably be the most productive times. Nymphing with the typical midges and small mayfly nymph patterns has good potential, no larger than size 16. Caddis pupa shouldn’t be overlooked. Small streamers are good choices for getting to places that a dead drift can’t reach. This heat is more than extreme, be prepared. Make sure you understand the limits of trout and yourself in the hot weather.
