The Metolius Has Been Consistent
6-25-2021
Fly and Field Outfitters
The Metolius has been consistent. The green drake hatch will probably wrap up in the next couple days. Dry fly action during extreme heat is typically inconsistent, but when a cloud covers up the sun the fish can go crazy on dry’s. Pale morning duns have been the most prevalent mayfly, hatches were happening around 1pm but the heat will shift this, either earlier or later. Caddis hatches are sporadic throughout the day and then pick up in the evening. A few very small stoneflies have been out and about, they’re larger cousins haven’t been seen quite yet. For nymphing, focusing on PMD nymphs and caddis pupa is a really good idea. Large stonefly and mayfly nymphs can work well as searching patterns, but they may be passed up if the trout are keyed into a hatch. The water may be cool on the Metolius but the air certainly won’t be. Have sun protection and a lot of water. Hopefully this abnormal heat won’t stick around.
