Cabo San Lucas Fish Report- The Gaviota Sportfishing Fleet and Fish Cabo Fleet
6-11-2009
Larry Edwards
Truly amazing how fast the fishing and numbers of charters can change
in just a week's time. The "Tuna Time" was high boat for the week,
reflecting 12 stripers released for 3 fishing days, along with 2
dorado, 1 wahoo & 1 yellowfin tuna. The best part is the fish were
all close to Cabo and starting at just a couple miles outside the
harbor, which allowed for more fishing time. According to Roberto
Marquez, owner of the Fish Cabo Fleet, the stripers were stacked-up
pretty good just outside Cabeza de Ballena, (more commonly called
"Gray Rock") but it was quite difficult to find a biter and the boats
were baiting numerous fish in their efforts to get one to bite. On
the other side of the improvement as the upswing in charter fishing
days, with the boats increasing to about 30% of so. Overall combined
fish counts for 35 days fished reflected 50 stripers, (41 released)
25 dorado, (to 40 lbs.) 4 wahoo and 28 yellowfin tuna. All in all, a
terrific fishing week for a change that reflected a substantial
upswing for the sportfishing industry.
Cabo Climate: Mostly sunny and warm, temps from 71 nights to 100
daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Still cool on the Pacific side but changing at Cabo
Falso and into the Sea of Cortez at 79-81 degrees. Light breezes and
little swell.
Best Fishing Area: Out in front of "Cabeza Ballena" and about 2-4
miles from the Cabo harbor.
Best Bait/Lure: Live bait was a must and even then, it was very
difficult to get the stripers to bite.
Live Bait Supply: Remains very good, with a mix of caballitos and
mackerel.
