Ixtapa Zihuatanejo Fish Report
6-25-2015
Larry Edwards
According to our on-the-spot local reporter, Captain Temo Verboonen, the fishing was in the excellent mode for the past week and the billfish were just outside the Bay a couple of miles or so. Then, the roosterfish bite was providing numerous opportunities for the inshore anglers as were the bonito and the jack crevalles. Even better and adding to the good fishing was the calm waters and moderate sea surface breezes that made for some excellent fishing days and not too far from the Bay. Temo reported a black marlin was weighed in this past week that weighed in at about 265 lbs. or so and of course, there were the numerous sailfish strikes to go with the everyday fishing.
IZ Climate: Air temperatures stable at 75 nights to 97 daytime highs and a 59% humidity level. It had been a partly cloudy week with a good mix of sunshine and anglers need lots of sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and long-sleeve light-weight shirts and clothing.
Sea Conditions: The local waters are warming up and were stable at 91-92 degrees from inshore to offshore and the waters were clean blue and clean green for the inshore areas.
Best Fishing Areas: Fishing the off-shore billfish started at just past the mile mark from the entrance to Zihuatanejo Bay in the clean, blue waters. The roosterfish were bunched up in several places ut stand-oudts were Playa Larga Beach and Valentin River beach area are both offering prime roosterfish action, along with the bigger jack crevalle and lots of bonitos.
Best Bait/Lures: The inshore fishing has been very good on spinning tackle and the roosterfish are pretty eager to take the live baits, poppers and even the fly-type streamers. Live bait was working very well for the roosterfish and the jack crevalle and since live bait is inexpensive, take extra for the day.
Bait Supply: Remains very good with an excellent supply of fresh baits for rigging and live baits at the rate of $5.00 per dozen.
