Cabo San Lucas Fish Report

Tropical depression, tropical storm and Hurricane Carlos, all one and the same, was still offering a minimal threat to the Cabo area but by Thursday morning, it evaporated into oblivion and was completely of the radar screen. So far, so good as we have dodged a couple of "bullets" in the early part of the hurricane season and only need to continue with the progress. So far, it's been a mostly sunny and clear week with air temps that varied from 73 nights to 93 daytime highs and a 61% humidity level. As of now, the next 10 days look pretty inviting for Cabo San Lucas and as long as the fishing bite continues, all should be well. According to our on location reporter/photographer, Carlos Pena Mireles, the fishing was good for the week and should continue to improve in the coming week with the good weather now on the horizon. High billfish boat for the week was the "Gaviota VIII", reflecting 8 stripers for 5 days fished, along with a couple of dorado and 3 skipjack. The overall fish counts for a combined total of 56 days fished reflected 39 stripers, (32 released) 2 sailfish, 6 sharks, (released) 1 yellowfin tuna, 27 skipjack, 1 roosterfish and 9 dorado.

Cabo Climate: Hot & sunny days so bring your suntan lotion and wide brimmed hats. Daytime temps going to be holding in the 90s a little humidity but not much relief at night so the A/C will feel very special.

Sea Conditions: The surface breezes are mostly west northwest and ranged from near calm to about 16 mph. The Pacific side sea temps are cool at 72-73, rising to 75 near San Cristobal to Cabo Falso. Cabo San Lucas to Palmilla Point rises to 79-80 and the 1150 Fathom Spot to Los Frailes, rises to 82-84.

Best Fishing Area: The past few days the billfish have gathered up in great numbers just outside the Cabo Bay area a couple of miles. While the fish are being stubborn to bite, it's just a matter of persistence that allows you to be a "hero of the day".

Best Bait/Lure: Rigged baits working well as were some of the artificials, too. Short biters were also being taken on live bait drop backs, so all-in-all, everything was working even if the fish were being stubborn to bite.

Live Bait Supply: Plenty of caballitos available a the $3.00 per bait rate and the crews were using the deceased baits for rigging and having them work quite well for the anglers.

Angler on left is Frank Bonise, Wolf Creek, Canada, big bull dorado and angler on right is local resident Roman Morales, big female dorado, caught fishing at the 95 Fathom Spot.

Left to right, Captain Julio Torres, Tuna Angler Frank Bonise, Dorado Angler Roman Morales and Marineo Juan Ruiz. 2 hour fight on 60 lb. test, taken on dead caballito, fishing at the 95 fathom spot.
