Cabo San Lucas Fish Report

5-14-2015
Larry Edwards

According to our Cabo San Lucas reporter, Carlos Pena-Mireles, reporting for the Gaviota Sportfishing Fleet and Roberto Marquez, reporting for the Fish Cabo Fleet, the billfish opportunities were right at the 50-50 mark this past week with better catches reflected in the area of the 95 fathom spot to the 1150 fathom spot. High billfish boat for the week was the "Gaviota VII", reflecting 3 stripers for 3 days fishing with all 3 captured at the 9 fathom spot. The overall fish counts for a total of 28 days fished reflected 14 stripers, (10 released) 6 roosterfish, 1 Sierra and 44 skipjack. Still a lot of billfish being seen in the different areas but the fish remain stubborn and difficult to get them to bite. Some of the boats are drifting over the areas with sinkered live baits for an occasional bite and others are using rigged dead baits, as well as artificials and live bait cast out to a visual sighting of a sleeper or a tailer.

Cabo Climate: A couple of partly cloudy days but most days with plenty of sunshine and fair fishing weather. Air temps varied from 69 nights to 88 daytime highs and a 33% humidity ratio.

Sea Conditions: A couple of windy days during the early part of the week with surface breezes flowing in from the westerly directions and ranging from near calm to 18 mph. Sea temps on the Pacific side, from Golden Gate Bank down across the Jaime Bank, in to Cabo San Lucas and up to Los Frailes on the Sea of Cortez side, all in the 74-76 degree ranges. The water is a bit warmer to the east of Cabo San Lucas and into the Sea of Cortez.

Best Fishing Area: The better bite came from the 95 Fathom spot to the 1150 Fathom spot, east of the Cabo San Lucas Harbor.

Best Lure/Bait: Live bait was working fairly well for fish being seen on the surface and a few were biting on sinkered live baits, too, along with a few fish taken on slow trolled rigged baits.

Live Bait Supply: Current bait supply is mostly caballitos at the $3.00 per bait rate.
