Cabo San Lucas Fish Reort
4-16-2015
Larry Edwards
The striper action picked up considerably this past week and almost all the billfish were taken within about 5-8 miles from the Cabo Harbor. High billfish boat for the week was the "Gaviota IV", with 4 stripers for 3 days fished & followed by the "Fish Cabo", with 4 stripers for 4 days fished. The overall catch rate on stripers was right at the 88% mark, and finally, we were seeing happy anglers. The crew and the anglers were still seeing many more fish than were caught but it was the occasional billfish catches and hookups that really saved the days. The catch report reflected for 25 days fished included 23 stripers, (19 released) 6 dorado, 1 mako shark, 31 skipjack and 20 Sierra for their efforts this past week.
Cabo Climate: A wonderful, sunny & mixed cloud week with air temps that varied from 64 nights to 84 daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Sea temps are warming up on both sides of the peninsula. The Pacific side, from the shoreline to 5-6 miles out, all at 76-77 degrees from inside the Golden Gate Bank o Cabo Falso. The Golden Gate Bank and Jaime Bank remained at 74. Cabo Falso to Los Frailes and out beyond the 1000 fathom curve was all at 77-78 degrees. Surface breezes were flowing from the westerly directions from near calm to 17 mph and making the Pacific side more difficult and less comfortable to fish on some days.
Best Fishing Area: If one drew an arc from the tip of Cabo's Arch that spanned 8 miles and fished within that arc, they probably would have had a very successful fishing charter. That span would have covered Cabo Falso, Herradu all produced billfish catches this past week.
Best Lure/Bait: Mixed action came on live baits, rigged baits and artificial lures with no specific one being much better than the other.
Live Bait Supply: Remained excellent or live caballitos at the $3.00 per day rate.
