Royal Star Fish Report

Royal Star

Not a whole lot to report today as the guys worked their way up the ridge in cruudy weather and poor fishing conditions. Overall the ridge is in one of those funk periods we have seen plenty of times in the past and nothing short of a major change in water conditions will likely revive it. We don't want to get carried away with the doom and gloom however as we all know how remarkable changes occur; sometimes overnight. I don't want to anyone to be hoodwinked though or feel I have mischaracterized the present setting - it is tough; very tough in all zones between Abre Ojos and Bahia Magdalena.
Now, before you all throw the towel in and sell off your gear for fall long range voyages, remember that just like everything the ocean goes through cycles; peaks and valleys as we say. Thus far we have scratched out decent fishing on our trips, but we are definitely sliding compared to the off the scale fall fishing we experienced over the past several years. Such dips, though not appreciated, are to be expected, and must be worked through with character and a good sense of humor. The tough times are the true measure of both crew and anglers.

With that said, the good news for the rest of the fleet down below is that the quality yellowfin chose yesterday, despite challenging sea conditions, to get back with the program and a handful of guys put together good days of tuna action. The sign of fish is still good and thank goodness for it as it is definitely the best game in town. In the meantime, Capt. Sims continued with the plan to target trophy yellowtail tomorrow working his way up the coast in mercifully calm conditions by day's end. With any luck good things are coming for this deserving group of anglers who have more than paid their dues.

Well it's back to the weather story that didn't completely shut down yesterday's action, but definitely rained on the parade. They made of day of it, thankfully finding a mid day birdschool that resulted in very good action on ballslapper grade dorado, but the bigger yellowfin were again fickle and difficult to set up on in twenty knots of breeze and the corresponding sea condition. They did have one Hail Mary stop in the late afternoon for a handful of...... Read More

It comes as no surprise that the weather finally backed off and the tuna responded with enthusiasm. Of course it is far from guaranteed that every time the weather takes a favorable turn the tuna will bite, but the majority of the time, if the fish are present, the odds are definitely in our favor in calm conditions. Once again the guys saw very good signs for sport fishing tuna in the lower zone with scattered fish spread out over...... Read More
