A smooth beginning to our final long distance voyage of the Winter/Spring 2015 season. Beckoning from afar are giant yellowfin tuna and wahoo that have been consistently available throughout the beginning portion of the 2015 season. Not to say that any of the catches made thus far have come easy, they most definitely haven't, but every voyage has had it's proportional share of success. It's all about opportunity. Fishing as we all know comes with no guarantee of glory. A guarantee of something distinct that anglers must work for about is the only thing anglers can really count on, and that is exactly what we offer; and what makes this style of fishing, and this fishery in general, so dynamic and appealing. One never knows what may occur, proven daily by the diversity of results inherent in long range fishing.
On another note the rolling sea conditions and southerly breeze we departed in subsided by early afternoon yielding to calm seas and fine conditions. And in short order, following the significant change in sea state, we began seeing steady signs of life. Jumping bluefin, spots up and breaking, multiple bird schools spread across a broad distance - all very obvious signs of good life around. While we did not stop to sample any of the spots there were numerous jumpers close enough to identify by the size of their pectoral fins and eyeballs. Twenty to thirty pound fish is what we saw. Suffice it to say that we are highly energized by the life observed. This bodes well for the upcoming three day "Mini" long range runs we scheduled on Royal Star back in March. Also, I can't imagine that with all this life already showing local - all the signs yesterday were from 60 - 90 miles from Point Loma, that the upcoming late May/early June voyages won't fare well.
Dates for the upcoming three day runs are as follows: Friday May 22nd - Monday May 25th, and Friday May 29th - Monday June 1st. As of this morning the Memorial Day run had a couple of spots available and the following weekend has a dozen or fifteen. This is a perfect opportunity to treat yourself to an early summer Royal Star "mini" long range run. Also coming up is the official beginning of our Summer 2015 season with the Baja Fish Gear eight day voyage departing Friday June 5th. This voyage still has a handful of spots available and at this point will positively run. Conditions in the long range zones below, not to mention the signs of wahoo on both the ridge and at Alijos rocks throughout the winter and spring, suggest many opportunities beyond the local zones for anglers on these runs. If any are interested in the above mentioned Royal Star voyages, or any others, please give Tracy or Captain/Co-Owner Brian Sims a call in the office. There are many opportunities to fish Royal Star this season throughout our schedule taking advantage of what is likely to be another banner offshore/long range season.

5-3-2015A calm day of mellow travel - not much to stimulate the senses other than an odd strike on small yellowfin tuna in the five to seven pound range. Interesting to say the least, and significant considering the location and time of year, but not unexpected, and consistent with the "El Nino" presently in effect. At the very least what we saw today supports the notion that we will be fishing for, and catching, yellowfin on the local offshore grounds...... Read More

02/24/15 After disembarking most of our anglers this morning, we began the trek towards San Diego. We had breezy weather all day and were chipping spray on the windows for most of the afternoon. So far we have been fighting a downhill current. Hopefully that changes up the line. Brian...... Read More
