Mazatlan Fishing Report

12-11-2014
Larry Edwards

While a good fishing week for the area, it was slow on anglers, even though lots of tourists in town. It's just that time of year when so many people arrive for the coming holidays but are not necessarily the fishing folks. The "Aries I" landed a smaller blue marlin in the 250 lb. range, along with a sailfish & the "Aries II" had a striper and 2 sailfish day for their anglers. Overall, the offshore fishing reflected 10 billfish for 9 fishing days that included 1blue marlin, 1 striper, 8 sailfish, (5 released) and 12 yellowfin tuna, (the 20-30 pounders). The inshore super pangas, also reporting in for 9 days fished, reflected 2 stripers, 2 sailfish, (1 released) 3 Sierra, 6 jack crevalle, 3 permit, 20 triggerfish and 8 red snappers.

Mazatlan Climate: A very nice week with a few days of partly cloudy skies that cleared for the weekend. Temps varied from 58 nights to 83 daytime highs & 67% humidity ration. Light jacket recommended for the mornings.

Sea Conditions: Water temps stable at 81-82.5 from inshore to offshore. Surface mostly calm with breezes to about 12 mph, flowing in from the westerly directions. Good clarity at about 15 miles.

Best fishing area: Starting at about 16-17 miles and outbound from there for the billfish and the tuna.

Best Lure/Bait: Rigged baits best for the billfish, including the stripers and the 1 blue marlin. Assorted feathers, cedar plugs good for the tuna.

Bait Supply: Remained very good even through the full moon. Rigging baits provided with the charters gratis and live bait at $1.00 per bait.
