Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report
12-11-2014
Larry Edwards
Most of the billfish are being caught close by to Cabo San Lucas, just offshore a few miles from the Cabo Falso Lighthouse area, about 5 miles outside the Cabo San Lucas Harbor area. While scattered billfish are being caught all along the Pacific side of the peninsula, from Cabo Falso to Pozo de Coto, the better concentrations seem to be in the closer area and most of the boats are drift fishing with weighted live baits at various depths. It's a rather unorthodox method for catching billfish but it works well at certain times of the year when the fish seem to be feeding in the deeper waters.
Cabo Climate: Cooler mornings & evenings with temps that ranged from 57 nights to 85 daytime highs & humidity level at 67%. Light jacket recommended in the mornings. Most of the week was a sun-cloud mix with the weekend sunny and clear.
Sea Conditions: Pacific side, on a north-south line from Todos Santos, down across the Golden GateBank and Jaime Bank & south to the 1000 curve, all at 79-80 degrees. Cabo Falso Light House and east to the 95 fathom spot and 1150 fathom spot and out to the 1000 fathom curve, all at 82-83 degrees. Surface breezes flowing in from the northwesterly directions ranged from calm to about 10 mph, very good fishing conditions.
Best Fishing Area: The Cabo Falso Drop-Off area, 2-5 miles offshore continues to produce the better catches.
Best Lure/Bait: Live bait was most effective for the billfish, drift fishing style, using weights and live bait at varied depths.
Live Bait Supply: Remains in good supply and unaffected by the full moon phase.
