"With this the only option for tuna," wrote Red Rooster III skipper Andy Cates September 12, "we decided to stay at the Island (Guadalupe) and give it another day. This was really our only full day of fishing for a 4-day trip and ended with 34 tuna and a couple of yellows. Quality was good but quantity was not available.

"Today we fished offshore in the morning and got a few Dorado and then went into San Martin for a few yellowtail and finished off with 1 Halibut in the cove. The weather is nice and we should have a nice ride home."

At the H&M Landing scales September 13, Cates found the winners. Brandon Wallace of San Diego won first place, for a 104-pound tuna he bagged with a sardine on a 3/0 Gorilla hook and 40-pound Izorline. He said he used a Tyrnos reel and a Shimano 30 to 80-pound test rod. He said the fight went on for an hour.

Susan Richardson of Riverside won second place, for a 98-pounder. Bill Falls of Las Vegas was third, for a 94-pounder. Since there was no trolling jackpot, there was a fourth-place winner: Charles Buzzetti of Atascadero, who got a 91-pound yellowfin tuna.
