Mazatlan Fishing Report

7-3-2014
Larry Edwards

The seasonal sailfish action came back a little for the past week's fishing from the Marina El Cid and while still not up to the norm, it appears to be getting back on track. There are still good numbers of dorado but many are smaller fish and being released to grow bigger. Angler activity is slow for fishing and perhaps just a "sign of the times"? The offshore fishing action for 6 days fished reflected 6 sailfish, (1 released) 33 dorado, (12 released) and 4 mako sharks. The inshore super pangas, also reporting in for 6 days fished reflected 1 sailfish and 14 dorado.

Mazatlan Climate: Early in the week was pretty decent climate conditions with light breezes and times of sunshine. As the week progressed, the clouds moved in and provided a 60-80% chance for thunder showers from Wednesday thru Sunday. Temperatures remained cooler than normal at 74 nights to 91 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: Surface breezes ranged from calm to 13 mph, flowing mostly from the southwest to northwest directions. Water temps remain stable and warm at 86 to 87 degrees from inshore to offshore waters.

Best Fishing Area: The sailfish are currently scattered in the offshore waters, albeit, there are more fish beginning to show up and it appears to be increasing. Most of the billfish have been in the 15-plus mile areas. Dorado catces continue near the offshore buoys.

Best Bait/Lure: Rigged baits are best for the billfish and for the mako sharks. Smaller lures and spoons working best for the dorado, especially the diving lures.

Bait Supply: The bait supply remains excellent for both, live bait at $1.00 per bait or the freshly caught baits for rigging that are provided with the charters.
