Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report

5-29-2014
Larry Edwards

The billfish bite remains pretty good for this time of year and the only surprises are the lack of sailfish, black & blue marlin and dorado counts, particularly given the high water temperatures throughout the area. The overall combined fsh counts for the past week for a total of 16 days fished reflected 11 stripers, (all released) 1 sailfish released, 3 thresher sharks, (2 released) 3 yellowfin tuna, 2 skipjack tuna and 7 dorado. High billfish boat for the week was the "Gaviota X", reporting a 5 striper release day for his two days fished.

This was one of those hard to figure fishing scenarios with all five fish caught in single day and followed by a zero catch for the second fishing day. The Tuna Time reported a 2 striper release day, along with a 2 thresher shark release for their 1 day fished. The two thresher shark were approximately 120 lbs. and landed from a double hook-up on the pair while drifting live bait about 4 miles east of the 1150 fathom spot..

Cabo Climate: Cabo San Lucas just missed her first tropical storm, Amanda, holding offshore several hundred miles and flowing in toward Puerto Vallarta. The winds were at 65 mph but expected to diminish to about 35 mph in the next few days. Early week in Cabo was mostly sunny and warm to hot, then changing to a partly cloudy weekend with temps from 75 days to 98 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: Overall, good and very fishable weather conditions. Surface breezes are varied to about 14 mph but the mornings remain quite calm. Sea temps cooler on the Pacific side @74-75 and pushing up to 79 degrees at the Jaime Bank. Moving in toward Cabo Falso the temps move up to 81 and 83 by Cabo. Cabo San Lucas and into the Sea of Cortez, temps holding at about 84 degrees. Very fishable thru the week.

Best Fishing Area: Between Chileno to Palmilla Ridge, (2-5 miles offshore) produced the best billfish catches this past week.

Best Bait/Lure: Live bait and ballyhoo baits working best on the billfish. Seeing many more fish than are biting.

Live Bait Supply: Remains plentiful at the $3.00 per bait rate paid direct to the bait vendors.
