Andy Cates brought Red Rooster III home to Lee Palm Sportfishers and H&M Landing August 10, after a fiv-day trip that visited Guadalupe Island and other spots south, on the 10 annual One Custom Rods trip. Chartermaster Rolf Johnson was aboard.
Eleven-year-old Bryan Kitahara of Placentia won first place and the trolling jackpot. He got a 63.6-pound yellowfin on a sardine, a 2/0 ringed Super Mutu hook and 40-pound clear Izorline to take the top spot. He used a TLD 20 reel and a Calstar 765 L rod. Bryan won the trolling jackpot for a 39.3-pound albacore. He goes to Brookhaven Elementary School, and got his dad Terry to help him display the fish.
Rooster regular Bob Michener of Oxnard was second, for a 63.2-pound tuna, and Tom Clark of Thousand Oaks was third, for a 63-pound yellowfin tuna.
