Wahoo Dad Trip
7-29-2007
Bill Roecker
Shogun's annual trip with David Choate, also known as "Wahoo Dad," returned from five days at sea July 29. Norm Kagawa was skipper. He said his anglers had about two-thirds limits of yellowtail, a couple of halibut and a dozen dorado.
Derek Appelblatt of Sacramento won first place for a 38.6-pound yellowtail. He gave his fish to the processors, so it wasn't available for a photo. He said he got it with a blue and white Salas 6X jig, tied to 30-pound line, with a Calcutta 700 reel and a Seeker Balck Steel 6465 rod.
Leonard Thorpe of Torrance sent a sardine to the bottom with an eight-ounce sinker on the dropper loop, and was rewarded with a 38-pound halibut that won second place. He put his bait on a 3/0 Super Mutu hook on 40-pound blue Izorline, and used a Pro Gear reel (he didn't know the model) and a Sabre six-foot rod.
John Gray of Huntington Beach was third, for a 33.8-pound yellowtail.
