The Billfish bite at Cabo changes as the water temps change

The billfish bite from Cabo San Lucas has been changing with the water temperatures and current conditions and seems to oscillate every day or two. Still plenty of fish being seen but they sure are not being overly cooperative for the anglers. The fish of the week was the yellowtail, (jurel) with most of the fish in the 12-15 lb. ranges and while not as big as the week before, they were welcome action for many of the anglers and very good table fare, too. Many of the boats were targeting the yellowtail from the light house at Cabo Falso to Pozo de Cota, on the Pacific side, lacking good billfish action for the anglers. The high billfish boat for the week was the Gaviota IX with 4 stripers released for 4 days fishing. The overall catch reports for a total of 27 days fished reflected 9 stripers, (8 released) 60 skipjack tuna, 1 mako shark, 3 Sierra, 2 roosterfish and 84 yellowtail.

Cabo Climate: Mostly sunny & warm days during the early week with some passing clouds as the week progressed and temps that ranged from 61 nights to 89 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: The water temps on the Pacific side ranged from 65-68 degrees from the Golden Gate Bank, out to the 1000 fathom curve and southerly to Cabo Falso and out to the 1000 fathom curve. South of Cabo Falso at about 10 miles, the temps increased to about 69 degrees and about 10 miles farther, increased to 72-73 degrees. From Palmilla Point, on the Sea of Cortez side of Cabo, the temps held good at 71-73 degrees out to the 1000 fathom curve and on up to Las Frailes.

Best Fishing Area: Billfish were scattered about and being seen in many locations on the Sea of Cortez side of Cabo, but not biting. the yellowtail bite continues from Cabo Falso to Pozo de Cota on the Pacific side.

Best Bait/Lure: Live bait was best for the billfish and for the yellowtail, too, albeit, some of the yellowtail were being taken on the yo-yo iron.

Live Bait Supply: Remains good with caballitos at the $3.00 per bait rate.
