Fish Report for 4-19-2013
The water temps are falling at Cabo, affecting the fish bite
4-19-2013
Larry Edwards
The water temperatures have been falling by the day and the rollover has had an enormous effect on the fish bite from Cabo San Lucas to Las Frailes. It appears that the Pacific influence has pushed southerly, wrapping Cabo San Lucas and rolling into the Sea of Cortez, diminishing the water temps in all locations and hampering the good fishing that had been taking place. The overall fish report for the past week, reflecting a combined total of 28 days, resulted in 7 stripers, (7 releases) 7 dorado, 4 Sierra, 1 yellowtail and 45 skipjack tuna. According to Captain Roberto Marquez, the skippers are still seeing plenty of billfish but have been unable to get them to bite with the every-changing water temps.
Cabo Climate: Cold evenings and mornings with temps down to 56 degrees at night and comfortable warm days with temps at 86. Westerly surface winds for most of the week and changing to NNE at 25-35 mph on Thursday, diminishing by Friday. Weekend should be good.
Sea Conditions: The ever-changing springtime water temperatures are wreaking havoc on the fishing. The Pacific influence has moved cold water into the Sea of Cortez, starting at 63-67 degrees from the Golden Gate Bank to the Jaime Bank and around Cabo San Lucas, up to Chileno and rising to 70-72 from Palmilla Point to Las Frailes. The prevailing westerly winds are changing and coming in from the northeast and perhaps the wind change will reverse the current flow from the Pacific side?
Best Lure/Bait: Live bait was by far the best, albeit, even with the live bait, the billfish remained disinterested for the most part.
Best Fishing Area: Still fish being seen in all of the standard locations from Gray Rock out to the 95, up to the 1150 and all the way to Destiladeras, but mostly non-biters.
Bait Supply: The bait supply remains good for all boats. Some of the boats are still doing better on the rigged ballyhoo baits.
