The full moon had an effect on the billfish catching from Mazatlan & the counts diminished greatly

The full moon had an enormous effect on the billfish catching from Mazatlan and the counts diminished substantially, even with the increased water temperatures. While the full moon was on March 27th, we usually see several days before and after the full moon phase that tends to influence the fishing results and now, given the increase in water temps, the fish should bounce back and perhaps get even better. We'll see. The March-April time frame throughout the lower Sea of Cortez is typically a difficult fishing period as the currents and temps change from season to season and even though billfish are present, they just don't want to bite very often. The overall fish counts for 16 offshore fishing days reflected 1 striper caught, 1 released and 1 sailfish. The inshore super pangas reported in for 5 days fishing that reflected 61 red snapper, 29 rock perch and 5 triggerfish.

Mazatlan Climate: Mostly sunny & warm days with a few passing clouds. Mornings & evenings still a little cold. Temps ranging from 52 nights to 85 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: Inshore waters remain off-color and greenish tinted with temps at 77 degrees. Offshore is clean water and holding stable at 80-81 degrees. A little breezier than normal with surface winds at 10-20 mph out of the westerly directions.

Best Fishing Area: None reported! Billfish being seen over a wide area but not wanting to bite.

Best Lure/Bait: All billfish taken on rigged trolling baits.

Bait Supply: Remained good for both, live bait and fresh caught baits for rigging.
