"Our efforts here at Guadalupe are starting to pay off," noted the report from Intrepid August 8. "There is still much room for improvement on both sides of the rail, but forward progress it is. Same kind of deal today, at 0900 the fish start boiling around us putting on a great show with very little interest in fly lined baits. With very little wind the kite is not an option. But the helium balloon with a bit of finesse was quick to produce. There were times we were able to have as many as four balloons spread around the boat for the hour they remained hungry. We did have our fair share of casualties losing about a dozen fish to pulled hooks and breakoffs. Even on 50-pound gear these fish can find the occasional victory. We will be staying here one more morning before heading out in search of a kelp or two, so wish us luck."
