Intrepid docked at Pt. Loma Sportfishing August 5 after a five-day trip to Alijos Rocks for the 25th NorCal Tuna Chasers group of 26 anglers with skipper Kevin Osborne and chartermaster Doug Inouye.
Tuna weren't easy to come by, he told dock reporter Bill Roecker. "But we had good weather and good fishing on quality fish," Kevin said. "It was best in the mornings. The water slipped a bit to 69 degrees."
Inouye added, "It was scratch fishing on really nice quality fish. We were sponsored by Accurate, Seaguar, Okuma, Skinny Wahoo Bombs and Five Star Fish Processing."
Three of the top five tuna made the 100-pound mark. Gary Kinoshita of Santa Clara nabbed a 101.6-pound yellowfin for first place. He said he got it with a sardine on a 3/0 Eagle Claw hook on 50-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon. He used 656-pound Daiwa spectra on an Accurate 870 two-speed reel and a Calstar 670 rod.
Bob Callejo of Saratoga won second place for a 100.4-pounder he got with a 3/0 Gamakatsu hook on 30-pound Seaguar Premier, 30-pound spectra, an Accurate BX-2 400 reel and a Calstar 800 M rod.
Mark Fujimoto of Torrance won third place for a 98-pound tuna. Steve Takagi of San Jose got honorable mention for his kite-caught 104-pound tuna, and chartermaster Inouye bagged a 95-pound tuna.
