New Melones
Kokanee are showing up in good numbers! On a recent outing to Melones in the Coyote Creek area we found limits fairly easy to catch. The small Salmon are suspended 25 to 50 feet deep. The average size is 14 inches and are falling for variety of lures. R&K pink hoochies, Sock Eye Slammers, Uncle Larry's copper Pop, Crystal Basins wiggle hoochies behind Vance's copper/pink and copper/orange dodgers proved to be very successful. Our attraction was Uncle Larry's copper flashers and silver slim Willies attached to the weight. Corn scent was Pro Cures fresh water shrimp and herring. My clients wanted some tips on how to catch Kokanee, and by the end of the day, I think their well on their way to having their own successful days!
Lake McClure
Windy and unsettled weather, has made Rainbow/King Salmon a bit more challenging! Off McClure Point on the main lake side and Temperance Bay, is holding Bows 15 to 30 feet deep, and Kings 35 to 80 feet deep. Average trout size is 15 inches, Chinooks are 2 to 4 1/2 pounds. We haven't landed any big Kings yet, but we've had several big ones on! Matching the Shad size, with small lures, is the answer. Most productive lures are nickel Sock Eye Slammers, Uncle Larry's Squid with a wiggle fin and Crystal Basins wiggle hoochies, dipped in Pro Cure's Shad and Crawdad oil. Bruce Baron and wife Najah of Sonora, with a friend Joe Conti of San Francisco on a recent trip had a blast catching and releasing fish before settling on a mixed bag of Rainbows and Kings. Ed Lewis and son Kevin were highest bidders for a day of fishing aboard my boat at a fundraiser for the Make a Wish Foundation. They caught a nice limit of Kings and Bows and released well over 50 fish. McClure is still rising, waters clear with some debris. Water temps 68 degrees.
