Lake McClure Fish Report
5-16-2010
Bruce Hamby
This weeks trout and salmon bite broke wide open! The rising water pushed the newly hatched shad near the surface, making for a feeding frenzy. Both Kings and Rainbows are holding from 35 to 70 feet deep from McClure Point to the dam. Bruce and Najah Baron of Sonora battled over 20 Rainbows and 14 Kings. They managed to box a combination of the two in the 2 1/2 to 3 pound class. Joe Conti of San Francisco settled for all Kings averaging 2 pounds. But the real story this week was Jerome Zalinski of Gustine and his partner John Harl, had a phenomenal day of catching and releasing over 50 fish, some unintentionally 5 lbs. or better. By the end of the day they had limited on Salomon, 2 pounds to 4 1/2 pounds. In order to match the shad hatch we needed to down size to smaller lures, such as Sock Eye Slammers, Crystal Basin wiggle hoochies and small Ex-Cell Cop Cars. Lake temperature by afternoon is 70.7 degrees. Rising water is very clear with some debris.

We tried anchovies and herring, however all 5 fell for shad. The main lake in the deeper waters seemed to be were the large schools...... Read More
