Mazatlan Fish Report- The Aries Sportfishing Fleet
7-30-2009
Larry Edwards
Just a fabulous fishing week from Mazatlan, both inshore and offshore
and another week of limit fishing for the dorado. The offshore
fishing produced 1 blue marlin, (280 lbs.) taken aboard the \"Aries
I\", skippered by Captain Jose Zamora, along with 6 yellowfin tuna to
80 lbs. and 3 dorado, for a single fishing day. Overall offshore
catches for 7 fishing days reflected 1 blue marlin, 6 sailfish, 12
dorado and 17 yellowfin tuna, (most of the tuna were quality fish in
the 75-90 lb. range). There were 17 inshore fishing days that again
reflected limit fishing for dorado and many releases. According to
Geronimo Cevallos, the fleet manager, the dorado are at all of the
buoys, starting at about 6 miles and on out to 20 miles, and holding
fish in the 12-20 lb. ranges. \"It\'s a light tackle fisherman\'s dream
and the fly fishing enthusiasts are have a field day with the fish\".
Mazatlan Climate: Cloudy days with warm nights at 78 degrees and
rising to 91 daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Very light surface breezes to about 7 knots from the
north with temps holding stable at 83-84 degrees.
Best Fishing Area: The blue marlin was taken at about 20 miles from
the Marina. The sailfish and yellowfin tuna were in the same
offshore areas at 22-25 miles southwest of the Marina El Cid.
Best Bait/Lure: Ballyhoo are working very well for the dorado at the
buoys, as are caballitos, both live & dead, mullet, strip baits and a
wide variety of lures. Rigged mullet working best for the sailfish.
