Cabo San Lucas Fish Report- The Gaviota Sportfishing Fleet and Fish Cabo Fleet
7-30-2009
Larry Edwards
While the billfish count tilted upward this past week, the dorado
counts fell to a new low. High boat was the \"Gaviotaq VIII\", with
Captain Juan Dominguez, releasing 4 stripers and landing 4 tuna and
one dorado for 3 fishing days. Overall counts for 26 days fished
reflected 19 stripers, (11 released) 2 dorado and 36 yellowfin tuna.
There\'s lots of talk about the black and blue marlin in the area, but
in reality, very few have been taken so far and it\'s probably due to
the lack of the feed biomass abundance, especially dorado, skipjack
and yellowfin tuna. Water temps are near perfect for the warmer
water dorado, but they have yet to show up in force. Perhaps after
the coming full moon we\'ll start to see some plus-sided changes that
will improve the billfish catches overall.
Cabo Climate: Mostly cloudy, hot days and warm nights, temps from 78
nights to 100 daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Mostly calm with very light swell. Temps from
Golden Gate Bank to Cabo to Jaime Bank and into Cabo Falso at 80
degrees and rising to 85-87 into the Sea of Cortez at Gorad Banks.
Best Fishing Area: From Cabo Falso and out to the southwest 10-15
miles and on into the Sea of Cortez, with scattered stripers along
the way. The tuna were found in the same areas, running with the
porpoise.
Best Lure/Bait: Live bait was best for the billfish, with an
occasional fish rising to the lure patterns, enabling a live bait
drop-back. Feathers & cedar plugs for the tuna.
Live bait supply: A couple of difficult days for bait but getting
back to the normal caballito, (goggle eye) supply
