The Metolius has been good

The Metolius has been good. The summer can be slow during the middle of the day, but when just one decent-sized cloud covers the sun up it can all change. If you see clouds rolling in, it can pay off to get the dry fly set up ready in advance. The upper river has some golden stones crawling around. Olive or tan caddis from size 16 - 18 hatch just about everywhere. Pale morning duns hatch best later in the afternoon on most days, but there’s almost always a few here and there. Blue wing olives will hatch in the late evenings or they may appear after a storm cools things down. Nymphing is going to be most productive with patterns that imitate the active hatches. Caddis pupa and PMD nymphs are heavy hitters. Golden stones also have good potential, especially considering they should be close to hatching in the lower sections. Euro-style jigged flies are a great option when nothing else seems to be getting attention. Last week’s precipitation was a great treat, let’s hope for lots of rain very little lightning, and an abnormally cool August.
