Fishing on the Lower Deschutes has been consistent. Hoot owl regulations are still in effect for all areas below Sherars Falls. Remember to check the myodfw website for any regulation updates before you head out there. Caddis are the predominant hatch, pale morning and evening duns are also hatching in decent numbers. Evenings are the most productive for surface action. Nymphing has been productive. Fishing with caddis and PMD nymph imitations can be effective at a variety of depths. If you’re fishing a stonefly or a different nymph that’s not actively hatching, you’ll want to get those down deep. A fun break from nymphing can be swinging flies. A swung caddis pupa or mayfly emerger can produce some super fun tightline grabs, it’s also a great way to cover lots of water. As always, when you head down there, prepare for the heat with lots of water and sun protection.
