Los Vaqueros Reservoir Sportfishing Report
6-24-2008
Urban Park Concessionaires
GENERAL CONDITIONS:
Hot! Hot! Hot! with little to no wind made for several spectacular days this week. The water level is still rising which means it has now caught up with the new vegetation along the shore. Lots of algae blooms toward the end of the week limited the shoreline visibility. The lake capacity is holding at 89%. The current temperature is at 78 (ouch) degrees. Los Vaqueros reservoir is oxygenated year round which raises the oxygen levels to aid in plant and fish health.
There was some very nice largemouth bass activity. Howden Cove and the mouth of Peninsula Cove were very active all week. The south cove and in front of the marina proved to be very good this week. Senkos and Kastmasters were working well. We're expecting some very nice bass fishing in the next several weeks. The stripers are still very active from the east coves in about 3 feet of water per Fullspeed fishing club. Use some of your favorite top water lures.
Several catfish were also brought in - they really love the warmer water. Chicken liver has always been a hit with the catfish
Trout still remained active even with the higher surface temperatures. Most anglers weren't going deep. We we're still seeing a good number of trout stringers in the am hours throughout the weekend. Power Bait and night crawlers are still the right combination for the trout.
For the salmon, stick with your smaller 1/8th to 1/4oz. Kastmaster or Rapala.
Nightcrawlers and chicken livers work very well at night for both cats and stripers. Bring down your favorite battery (fire prevention) operated light and join the crowd. Our next night fishing is Saturday 6/28/08.
HOURS:
Marina is open from 6:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. All rental boats must be back at the marina by 6:30 p.m. Watershed gates close at 8:00 pm seven days a week through March 2008. For the night fishing Saturdays, hours are extended to 9 pm.
PLANTS:
Calaveras Trout Farms will be planting 6/24/08.
TROUT:
As mentioned above, lots of limits this week, no whoppers were reported. Cian Mullins of Livermore reeled in a very nice limit from the rockwall area all on nightcrawlers.
If you are new to fishing or have years under your belt we are offering free guided fishing tours on Saturdays. We have two designated tours, one starting at 8:30am, the second starting at 11:30am. Each tour will be approx. 1.5hrs so bring your warm clothes. We are also now offering mid-week tours with reservations. We will tell and show you all the hotspots, techniques and demonstrations (live) out in the boats.
BASS:
Vic Eng of Oakland pulled in a very respectable largemouth of 5.47 lbs. from Peninsula Cove on a Senko worm. Gene Leong of Dublin reeled in a 7.65 lb. large mouth from the point outside Peninsula Cove on a Kastmaster. Dan Beltran of San Francisco hooked a 7.09lb striper from the sunken oaks area on a rubber crawdad.
CATFISH:
Jeff Garcia of San Jose wrestled up a 16.51 lb. cat from the sunken oaks area on a nightcrawler. Ken Kauscha of Discovery Bay lassoed a 21.25lb'er from the east shoreline on a Zozuri Hardcore lure. He was fishing at approx. 20 feet of water, he released it.
