Larry Edwards
Another week of difficult offshore fishing according to Geronimo
Cevallos, as the big schools of sardines and catchable critters moved
out of the area and up into the Sea of Cortez. There has been a hard
southern current pushing into the Sea of Cortez and moving all of the
feed biomass for the bait fish off to the north. While the water
clarity is improving by the day, the sailfish, (which are very late
arriving this season) have yet to filter into and take hold in the
Mazatlan area. On the other hand, the boats are seeing more and more
dorado in the 15 lb. ranges, stack-up under the buoys and while not
yet overly eager to bite, some of the boats are catching pretty well
on small, fresh squid, slow trolled by the buoys. Unquestionably, a
different way to fish for dorado, but it is working. The inshore
fishing has been producing excellent catches on Sierra, (mostly limit
fishing) quite a few red snapper and trigger fish in abundance.
Mazatlan Climate: Mostly sunny and warm with temps from 67 nights to 88 daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Southern currents pushing clear blue water into the area, with temps at 82 inshore and rising to 84 offshore
Best Fishing Area: None reflected
Best Bait/Lure: Fresh squid for the dorado and rigged baits for the billfish.

Early in the week, the "Fish Cabo" had a 4-striper release day fishing in front of Chileno and wound up with 8 stripers released for 3 fishing days. The overall combined fishing report for the Gaviota Sportfishing Fleet & Fish Cabo boats for a total of 40 days reflected 45 stripers, (26 ...... Read More
